Frances Willard and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union: the Forgotten Story in 19th Century Women’s Activism

The success of last season’s debut Virtual Lecture via the Zoom platform has led to a two-part series of lectures scheduled for Spring 2022. The focus will be on topics related to Blacksmith Joseph Vagg and his wife, Nellie. Mr. Vagg’s Blacksmith Shop is a popular stop on the Museum’s campus tour. Limited seating will be available to view these lectures at the Cobblestone Church. Registration fees benefit the Cobblestone Society & Museum, a 501c3 organization.

Nellie Vagg, a supporter of the WCTU, was a member of the Orleans County Woman’s Christian Temperance League for about 25 years, serving as treasurer and rising to the position of delegate to area and state conventions.

Guest speaker Lori Osborne, Director of the Frances Willard House Museum & Executive Director of the Center for Women’s History and Leadership in Evanston, Ill.

Join us for a presentation focused on the history of the WCTU and its connection to Frances Willard, native daughter of Churchville, NY. Nellie Vagg, devoted wife to Joseph, was a strong supporter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union.
