- According to an article in the Geneva Times of April 30, 1971 relating to the centennial celebration of Port Gibson United Methodist Church, the original church built in 1834-35 was cobblestone. Final services were held there on March 25, 1871, after which it was voted to tear down the old church and construct a new one. The cobblestone church was built at a cost of $1,600. The new church built of brick, cost about $9,000. The dedicatory sermon was preached by the Rev. B.I. Ives on December 13, 1871.
